What do I need to do to show a film or play music on campus for non-educational purposes?

If the use of film and/or music on campus is not for an educational purpose, you must:

  1. Submit a Copyright Clearance Request by filling out the provided form.
  2. If necessary, acquire a license and view cost estimations.

Film licensing:

  • For documentaries: Check if the documentary has its own website for licensing or permission.
  • Identify the licensing agency and search for the film. Audio Cine Films and Criterion Pictures predominantly provide film showing licenses in Canada.
  • Unable to find it? Contact the film production company directly for permission. The Copyright Advisor (mrucopyright@mtroyal.ca) can assist you.

Film cost estimation: Depending on which database has the film you’re looking to show, fill out the Criterion quote request form or the Audio Cine Films quote request form for a cost estimate.

Music licensing:

  • Identify who owns the music rights: such as the artist, record label, and/or music publisher.
  • Coordinate with MRU Copyright Office: The Copyright Advisor will assist in obtaining a public performance license from an agency.
  • Contact the licensing agency by email (Entandem, SOCAN, Re:Sound, or CONNECT Music Licensing) and request a music license tailored for your event's needs.

Music cost estimate: Estimate costs based on the type, duration, and room capacity for music use. Helpful information can be found on the Queen’s University Library website.
