How do license agreements work when copying musical works or sound recordings?
Digital versions of musical works available through the MRU Library are subject to licenses. While these licenses are often flexible for classroom use, it is important to review the terms to see if there are limitations in how these works may be copied, distributed or performed (under Access Options > Show license in the searched item’s description).

Personal licenses which give you access to musical works or sound performances (e.g. Apple Music or Spotify) only allow you to play music in your home (not in a classroom setting). These contracts override user rights under the Copyright Act, meaning that neither you nor your students may use or perform works obtained through subscription services.
