MakerBot Replicator Z18

The MakerBots use fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing, the most widely-used type of 3D printing. It uses a thermoplastic filament, which is heated to its melting point and then extruded, layer by layer, to create a three-dimensional object.

Specifications

Materials: MakerBot proprietary PLA filament (black, white, yellow, green, orange, purple, cool grey, warm grey)

Software: MakerBot Print

File types: .STL

Machine details: 2,592 cubic inches, 30.0 L × 30.5 W × 45.7 H cms, 11.8 L × 12.0 W × 18.0 H inches

Production time: dependent on the project scale, 10 minutes - several days

Procedures

  1. Any use of the FDM equipment must be supervised by the Maker Studio staff.
  2. Only approved filament may be used in the FDM printers.
  3. Create or download your 3D model. Save it as an STL and upload it through the Maker Studio page on the Library website.
  4. Verify your file before submission:
    • The file is the correct dimensions that you require.
    • The dimensions fit within the dimensions of the machine.
    • The file is a solid mesh and does not have holes or open surfaces.
    • You have chosen the appropriate material and colour for your print.

How to print using MakerBot Print

These are basic settings for the MakerBot Print software. You must determine which settings are appropriate for each print. If you would like more detailed instructions on how to set up various prints you can go to the MakerBot website.

  1. To open an object to your local computer, open the Project Panel, click Add Models, and navigate to the location of the saved file. Select the file and click Open to import it into MakerBot Print. You can also click File>Insert File to import the object into MakerBot Print. Once a model has been added, it is available to be used on your build plate.
  2. The Print Model Panel is on the right. You can use these tools to adjust your print settings e.g. add supports, scale, arrange and set layer height.
  3. Once you've prepared your file to print and have loaded filament on your printer, you are ready to print. To do so, select your printer and select either the Print or Export button, they will be located in the same location depending on how you're sending prints to your printer. If you are connected to your printer, your printer will automatically start heating up. If you are exporting your file, you'll need to export your file to a USB jump drive and take it to the printer.
