Background on Generative AI Tools in Library Provided Resources
Mount Royal University Library provides access to third party resources that support the teaching and research activities of the MRU community.
While most search products used in libraries already use algorithmic and predictive tools to suggest results, some third-party vendors are now introducing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools that promise to enhance search capabilities, identify key concepts, and generate summaries or syntheses.
Some of these tools are controlled by our vendors and cannot be disabled. Where we do have a choice, we evaluate each tool on a case-by-case basis to determine whether it should be enabled for users.
Assessment criteria includes evaluating whether a tool accurately and effectively supports information discovery and aligns with the emerging research needs of our community and weighing potential harms including impacts on learning, privacy, copyright and intellectual property rights. This approach aligns with how we evaluate all the information tools we provide.
We recognize that approaches to generative AI vary across campus. We will consider whether Gen AI powered tools are clearly labelled so that users can choose when and how to engage with them as part of our decision making process around activation. We will also advocate for more transparent labelling with vendors for those tools we do not control. We will continue to provide information about both the opportunities and challenges AI tools pose through our teaching and collections.
