How do I access and use the Kanopy video database?

Kanopy is a streaming film database that features documentaries, world cinema, classic and independent films. MRU subscribes to a select, and changing, list of titles from Kanopy.

Kanopy can be viewed in a web browser and the latest version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge is recommended. Kanopy films licensed by MRU can be found by searching in LibrarySearch or by accessing Kanopy through the Databases A-Z list.

Do I have to create an account to use Kanopy?

No. If you are on campus viewing Kanopy in a web browser, you can play films without having to log in or create an account. If you are off-campus you will be prompted to log in remotely using your myMRU sign-in.

Creating a free Kanopy account is only necessary if you are using the Kanopy Mobile app (available for most devices).

To create an account using the app:

  • Click ‘Get started’
  • Click ‘Find University’
  • Search for Mount Royal University (or Mount Royal College in older versions of the app)
  • You may be prompted to log into MRU’s proxy using your myMRU login
  • Sign up using Google or enter your name, email address and create a password

Adding libraries to an existing Kanopy account

If you already have a Kanopy account (e.g. through the Calgary Public Library), you can add MRU to your existing account. In the app:

  • Click ‘More’, select ‘Memberships’
  • Select ‘Add a library’
  • Search for Mount Royal University (or Mount Royal College)
  • You may be prompted to log in using your myMRU login

You will now be able to switch between libraries in the Memberships area.

Does Mount Royal have access to the full Kanopy title database?

No, MRU does not subscribe to the full Kanopy database.  We license titles on a case by case basis for a set term (such as one, two or three years). If a title you formerly had access to has disappeared it may be that the license has expired. Titles may be suggested for consideration via the Recommend a Purchase form. The full Kanopy catalog, including titles not accessible via the MRU subscription, is available online.
