How do I get a book or video that's on the Library shelves?

Use LibrarySearch to find the call number:

Use LibrarySearch to look for the item you want to find. The call number is like the book or video’s address. You can confirm which floor the book is on and find a map to the exact row of shelving by using the Locate icon

Note the number and then look for the signs:

There are signs in the elevators, outside the elevators, and on the ends of each shelf at the top that show the range of call numbers or addresses in the row.

Find the letters first:

  • The leftmost part of the call number (like the letters "PE" in PE1126.A4 C6444 2008) is the first part to find.

Follow the numbers:

  • The numbers in the call number (like 1562) are typically in numerical order within the subject area (like 1-2569)

Within than, find the letters:

  • Further sections of the call number (like "A4 C6444") will narrow down the address of your item.

With the call numbers, books on the same and similar topics will be grouped together, as well as those by the same author so once you’ve found one good book you can look to the left and look to the right and likely find another.
