What checklist should I review before using an AI tool?
Before using an AI tool for academic work, ask:
- Is this use allowed in this context? Check your course, assignment, research, workplace, or project expectations before using an AI tool.
- Is the information safe to include? Do not upload sensitive, confidential, private, or restricted information unless you know it is allowed.
- Do I have permission to use this content? Check copyright, licensing, data ownership, and any limits on sharing or uploading material.
- Can I verify the output? AI tools can be wrong, incomplete, biased, or misleading. Review important facts, citations, analysis, and conclusions.
- Am I using my own judgment? AI can support your work, but it should not replace your thinking, responsibility, or academic integrity.
- Do I need to acknowledge or disclose AI use? Some instructors, publishers, funders, or workplaces may require this.
- Would I be comfortable explaining how I used it? Keep a brief note of what tool you used, what you used it for, and how you checked the result.
Helpful question: If this output were wrong, biased, or shared too widely, what would the risk be?
