How can I use LibrarySearch to browse the library’s collection?

You may want to browse the library’s collection if you are looking for general ideas or multiple answers as opposed to searching for a specific result or title.

Use the LibrarySearch Browse function

The ‘Browse’ option found at the top of the LibrarySearch screen allows you to look through alphabetical lists of library items by their title or author. It also allows you to look through alphabetical lists of subject headings or call number assigned to library items.

You can subject browse by either Canadian subject headings (CSH) or by Library of Congress subject headings (LSCH). Subject headings are used by libraries to describe what an item is about and also to group together items on related topics, similar to using a hashtag (#) on social media.

TIP #1: Most of MRU’s library item records include Canadian subject headings, so if you're searching for Canadian content, a CSH subject browse search is a great place to start.

TIP #2: Start with a subject search to find out possible subject headings you might want to use in your research.

TIP # 3: Authors do not come up in the subject browse. To find books BY and ABOUT an author, use the 'author browse' option.

Use “Starting With” to Browse by Title or Call Number in Advanced Search

Searching for items starting with a particular Library of Congress (LC) call number allows you to do a very specific search of physical items in our collection including print books and DVDs. For example, the following advanced search will find items starting with RT (the call number used for nursing) that include the words Canada or Canadian.

Example of 'starts with' search

Do a blank search in LibrarySearch and browse by filter.

Perform an empty or blank search in LibrarySearch by using either of these search queries: (*) or  ?. The results will return all Library holdings and you can use the filters on the right hand side of the search to filter by a specific criteria. For example you could limit by Resource Type: Videos and Location: Reserves to browse all the videos on reserve for classes.

Use the LibrarySearch virtual shelf browse using Related resources

A virtual shelf browse is available in the Related resources section of many LibrarySearch records. These resources allow you to browse items by call numbers - similar to the experience of browsing items together on a physical shelf in the Library.
